Jornada 100 x 35 • March 3, 2008

On Monday March 3rd, 2008, a special year-long celebration will be launched entitled “Jornada 100 X 35.” The title not only symbolizes the dimensions of the island of Puerto Rico—100 miles by 35 miles—but also pays homage to the life and legacy of Puerto Rican patriot and National Poet Juan Antonio Corretjer on his centennial and celebrates the 35th year of the PRCC. This “Jornada” has a two-fold purpose:

  • to create awareness and consciousness about the many contributions of both Juan Antonio Corretjer and the PRCC and
  • to raise $50,000 through a year-long campaign that will benefit the PRCC and its programs. In order to achieve the latter goal, we are identifying 100 people who will pledge $325.00 to $499.00 this year, additionally identifying 35 people who would pledge $500.00 or above.

The inaugural event will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 3rd with a walk-through tour of the PRCC’s main building, located at 2739-41 W. Division Street, which houses the Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School and the Consuelo Lee Corretjer Child Care Center.

The tour will continue to the office of the PRCC’s publication La Voz Del Paseo Boricua, housed at 1112 N. California Avenue, and then to the Vida/SIDA (our AIDS awareness program), CO-OP Humboldt Park (an obesity prevention health initiative), and the Andres Figueroa Cordero Memorial Library (which houses the Community Informatics UIUC Cohort) all at 2703 W. Division Street. The tour will end at La Casita de Don Pedro (a former vacant lot transformed into a community space for cultural engagement) at 2025 W. Division Street.

Following the above tour we will honor the grand opening and dedication of the Comcast/Batey Recording Studio and showcase the Radio Batey internet radio station, and the Batey photography lab, located in the PRCC youth-led space Cafe Teatro Batey Urbano, at 2620 W. Division Street.
