Nunca he dudado ser yo,
ni cargo carimbo conmigo,
no ha podido el opresor,
marcarme con su apellido.

Siempre he sido boricua,
ciudadano puertorriqueño,
eso no me lo quita,
fuerza alguna del imperio.

Nací en el Grito de Lares,
y me reafirmé en Jayuya,
no me parió la Ley Foraker,
ni soy aborto de la luna.

Yo nací del alma de Betances,
a sangre y fuego surgió mi alma,
yo nací en el parto de Lares,
soy hijo del vientre de Mariana.

Que yo soy, he sido y seré,
un pitirre puertorriqueño,
no porque lo diga un papel,
ni ley alguna del imperio.

Simplemente soy quien soy,
nunca he dejado de ser,
lo que fui ayer soy hoy,
y lo que hoy soy seré después.

Que no hay poderes ni fuerzas,
ni retórica de vitrina,
que hagan que jure bandera,
a otra bandera que la mía.

Que yo nací puertorriqueño,
de alma y corazón adentro,
y antes que dejar de serlo,
¡me voy directo al infierno!

A resolution calling for the release of Oscar López Rivera and Avelino González Claudio was overwhelmingly adopted at the UCC General Synod in Tampa on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 (see http://www.ucc.org/news/resolution-calling-for.html; Norberto González Claudio was not mentioned because the January 1 deadline for submitting resolutions was several months before his May 10, 2011 arrest took place). Rev. Linda Jaramillo (Executive Minister for Justice and Witness Ministries) provided an excellent educational workshop regarding the historical context and spoke about her visits at FCI Dublin (with Dylcia Pagán, Lucy Rodríguez, and Carmen Valentín) and at FCI Danbury with Alejandrina Torres; Carlos Alberto Torres wrote a compelling letter attesting to the UCC’s long history of support for the prisoners (http://www.ucc.org/justice/criminal-justice/letter-of-thanks.html); Norma López and youth from First Congregational Church of Chicago bore witness to this legacy through their presence at Rev. Jaramillo’s workshop; Catalina and Liza Torres did terrific advocacy and Liza spoke brilliantly on the floor of the Synod to move adoption of the resolution; Rev. Carmen Alicia Nebot, Rev. Jorge Morales (Conference Minister of the Illinois Conference), and Rev. Marilyn Pagán-Banks (Chair of the Council for Hispanic Ministries and Co-Chair of the Council for Racial and Ethnic Ministries) also made powerful statements on the floor of the Synod. Revs. Sala Nolan (Minister for Criminal Justice and Human Rights for Justice and Witness Ministries), Rev. Candita Mattos (staff to the Council for Hispanic Ministries), and Rev. Dr. Nozomi Ikuta (Co-Chair of the Interfaith Prisoners of Conscience Project) also provided invaluable staffing and coordination. A really fine team effort!
The exhibition, titled, “Inside Out” debuted at the Through the Music Gallery. The art exhibit was also featured in the Brattleboro Gallery Walk, which is held the first Friday of every month and includes art exhibits in over 50 locations around Brattleboro, Vermont. Thousands of people from across the region come to the event and have the opportunity to purchase artwork, which is up for the entire month.
In total, eleven prisoner artists exhibited, both political and social prisoners. VAPP also displayed artwork in a mock-solitary cell. Oscar’s painting on “Malcolm X” hung in the opening entrance to the gallery. There was both high attendance on opening night and throughout the entire month.

VAPP also works to continually keep conversations open about people’s struggles in the current political/economic system. In the past VAPP has hosted Robert King, Ramona Africa and the MOVE documentary, and participated in a regional Running Down the Walls. The art show was it’s first extended exhibit.

On Saturday, May 28, the Cleveland Chapter of the National Boricua Human Rights Network and the Interfaith Prisoners of Conscience
Project sponsored an afternoon of drumming and spiritual renewal to call for the release of Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López
Rivera on the eve of the 30th anniversary of his arrest. The “Grito de Libertad” was held at Edgewater Park, overlooking the shore of Lake
Erie, and featured tambourines and conga, bongo, and taiko drums, which attracted the attention of many people who had come to enjoy the afternoon there. Special thanks to Rubén Hernandez and his group for their vibrant contribution to the work for Oscar’s freedom.

Today I was blessed to be given this verse from the Bible, Romans 5:4 endurance develops strength of character and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. I meditated and prayed on this and was abundantly blessed.

Enrique Salgado Jr on his Humboldt Park Freedom Walk yesterday : This morning we walked and it was hard. This afternoon I walk with my family in solidarity with the Freedom Walk from Terre Haute, Ind. to Chicago. My goal for the day is 12 miles. To Micheal and Matt, I see your videos and I am humbled by the miles you are eating up. As a Puerto Rican I am forever grateful for your willingness. I also want to thank my family for walking with me and support this effort and in turn Oscar.

And today: Weds morning Solidarity Walk with the Freedom Walk in honor of Oscar Lopez Rivera. Yesterday I walked 6 miles in the morning and 5.5 in the evening fro a total of 11.5 miles. This morning meditating and praying with Oscar in mind I was able to get over small mental hurdles to walk 7 miles. Please support the Freedom walk by pledging at boricuahumanrights.org

Thirty years ago, on May 29, 1981, Oscar López Rivera was arrested for his role in the Puerto Rican independence movement. That same summer, Irish Republican Army members Bobby Sands, Francis Hughes, Raymond McCreesh, Patsy O’Hara, Joe McDonnell, Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch, Kieran Doherty, Tom McElwee, and Mickey Devine engaged in a hunger strike, refusing food for periods of 46 to 73 days, and ultimately giving their lives, in the fight for recognition of their status as political prisoners. The hunger strike was pivotal in thwarting Britain’s efforts to criminalize the Irish Republican Army political prisoners in the H-Blocks and Armagh Women’s Gaol and concentrated world-wide media attention on the war in Ireland, paving the way for Sinn Féin’s entrance into the political arena and the electoral successes that followed.

On May 22, 2011, three members of Sinn Féin, all of whom are also former political prisoners and hunger strikers, traveled to Cleveland, Ohio for an event hosted by of the Friends of Sinn Féin to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Hunger Strike. Gerry Kelly (Ard Chomhairle [National Executive] and a Member of the Legislative Assembly for North Belfast) described the overall history and context of the struggle for political recognition and Pat Sheehan (Member of the Legislative Assembly for Belfast West) spoke about his experience as a 55-day hunger striker; he was near death when the strike ended in October of 1981. Rita O’Hare (General Secretary and current Representative to the United States) was also part of the Sinn Féin delegation to Cleveland. The program also included songs from the Irish struggle, including Joe McDonnell, whose lyrics include these words:

And you dare to call me a terrorist
While you look down your gun
When I think of all the deeds that you have done –
You have plundered many nations
Divided many lands
You have terrorized their people
You ruled with an iron hand
And you brought this reign of terror to my land.

Through the many months internment
In the Maidstone and the Maze
I thought about my land throughout those days
Why my country was divided
Why I was now in jail
Imprisoned without crime or without trial
And though I love my country
I am not a bitter man
I’ve seen cruelty and injustice at first hand
And so one faithful morning
I shook bold freedom’s hand
For right or wrong I tried to free my land.

The program concluded with another song, A Nation Once Again, whose chorus proclaims: And Ireland, long a province, be a nation once again.

After the program ended, Rev. Nozomi Ikuta of the National Boricua Human Rights Network presented the Sinn Féin members with a painting by Oscar López Rivera of Don Juan Antonio Corretjer. Pictured here (from left to right) are Nozomi Ikuta and Carlos Ivan Ramos of the Boricua Human Rights Network; Rita O’Hare, Pat Sheehan, and Gerry Kelly of Sinn Féin; and Jack Kilroy of Friends of Sinn Féin.
